About our work placements
For the past 20 years this scheme has helped emerging artists to take their first steps into the theatre industry by providing work placements on our productions as either Assistant Musical Directors, Assistant Designer and Assistant Stage Manager. There is one of each of these roles available on every BYMT production. This year, each BYMT production will also have a role available for either an Assistant Director or an Assistant Choreographer.Â
Each successful candidate will be embedded as an important part of the full scale creative and production team on residential production with a company of between 35-40 young people from across the UK. Each candidate will be partnered with an industry professional who will act as their professional line manager and mentor. The placements are ideally suited to conservatoire, university graduates, final year students, or those with comparative experience who are wishing to develop a career within the theatre industry and are interested in working with young people.
A typical BYMT Season includes around 7 full scale productions throughout the year, one during the Easter holidays and the rest across the Summer between the months of July and August. Our productions are all brand new music theatre in a variety of genres and the successful candidates will be placed on a show that best suits their skillset. These placements give you the opportunity to take on responsibility akin to a professional role while in a learning and supportive environment. Responsibilities could include (but will not be limited to) the below.
We are proud to say that some previous CWPs have returned to work with BYMT in other roles and grown their careers form working relationships established on one of our productions.
Creative Work Placements will receive full board accommodation (including meals), and an expenses fee to cover their travel and any further fees incurred on production.
Assistant Musical Directors
Support the production’s Musical Director in delivering the music for the production. This could include anything from leading the company warmups, coaching individuals and groups, acting as rehearsal pianist, band leader/conductor; working closely with instrumentalists, creating arrangements and supporting the MD administratively. They will also have the opportunity to work with at least one professional musician and a number of young band members as part of the production. Their mentor will be the MD, an industry professional who will oversee their development in all necessary areas.
Assistant Designers
Support the production Designer in all aspects of design across props, set and costume. This could include anything from building sets, sourcing and making props to leading costume fittings and altering costumes, to collaborating with the stage management team on prop briefs, get ins and get outs. Their mentor will be the Designer who will oversee their development across all of the necessary areas.
Assistant Stage Managers
Support the Stage Manager and Deputy Stage Manager in the technical production of the show. You may be asked to create and maintain a clear and accurate prompt copy for the show, ensure the rehearsal space is prepared for the cast and staff, support the stage manager in risk assessments and other production paperwork, and participate in the get in and get out. Their mentor will be the Stage Manager, who will oversee their development in all necessary areas.
Assistant Choreographers
Support the Choreographer with the creation, teaching, and maintenance of the choreography and the movement direction of the production throughout rehearsals and performances. This role is ideal for emerging practitioners looking to develop their rehearsal-room practice, leadership skills, and understanding of choreography. The role will include assisting with teaching material, running warm-ups, maintaining movement quality, and supporting performers to feel confident and expressive and tell a narrative through movement.
Assistant Directors
Support the Director in shaping and delivering the overall vision of the production. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to be embedded in the rehearsal room, supporting storytelling, working closely with performers, and assisting with staging, notes, and creative problem-solving. The Assistant Director will observe and contribute to the rehearsal process and gain insight into large-scale youth music theatre productions.
