About Alex

As our Welfare and Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), Alex helps to make sure that everyone who takes part in our work feels happy, safe and supported from start to finish. He plays a key role in shaping our programmes, plans and policies, making sure that wellbeing, inclusion and care are woven into everything we do.

Dedicated to promoting the “fundamental fun” of theatre, Alex works across all areas of our programme – from productions and camps to workshops and events – and is the main point of contact for any safeguarding or welfare concerns. He works closely with our brilliant pastoral teams to create warm, welcoming spaces where everyone feels able to be themselves, take part fully, and have a wonderful time, and is always on hand to support our participants, staff and their families.

If you have any questions or concerns that require welfare or safeguarding support, Alex is the person to contact.

After growing up rurally in the middle of nowhere, Alex’s path was irreversibly changed after taking part in his local youth theatre. Alex then began his career as an actor before moving into directing, where he worked with some of the UK’s leading theatres. He later stepped into leadership roles at a number of arts organisations, focusing on creating exciting opportunities for children and young people to get involved in the arts.

Alongside his work at BYMT, Alex is a freelance producer and company manager, and runs Seawitch Theatre (dedicated to developing new musicals) and Tigerstripe Theatre (who deliver unique theatre experiences for young people in rural areas). He’s also Head of Drama at one of the UK’s oldest prep schools – and when not in a rehearsal room, you’ll probably find him somewhere in the Shires with his golden retriever, Bonnie.
