Performer Auditions FAQs

How do our auditions work?

Each audition is a group creative workshop led by professional theatre practitioners. Across three hours you will have the opportunity to explore your skills and enthusiasm in acting, singing and movement, in an ensemble setting.

We ask you to arrive (on Zoom or at the venue) 10 minutes in advance. In the beginning of the audition there will be a chance to meet the team and talk about what to expect. You will be asked to participate in a warm up, then look at some scenes and improv in small groups. The whole group will learn a new song together, and you will sing the song you have just learned. It is likely that you won’t have heard to song before. You will also take part in a group dance to that same song and have the chance to show the team some improvised movement.

BYMT Auditions are very friendly and supportive environments for young people to explore their creative abilities. We only ask for three things – authenticity, tenacity and generosity. Show us who you are as a performer, give everything a really good go, and support everyone in the space.

What am I auditioning for?

You are auditioning to join the BYMT Company and take part in BYMT’s 2026 Season of New Music Theatre. These are two week residential courses during the Easter or Summer holidays, where you’ll work with a professional artistic team to create a brand new piece of music theatre that will be performed in a professional theatre at the end of the project. Unlike most other youth theatre companies, BYMT is unique in creating ONLY brand new shows. Be part of something incredible and star in one of our new shows taking place across the UK.

Do I need to prepare anything?

You don’t have to prepare any material beforehand. All the material will be learned on the day as a group. For the vast majority of our Productions, a lot of the material will be learnt once you have started, so it is important that you show us your retention skills, and your ability to persevere. We are not looking for perfection, we are looking for potential!

The only thing to prepare is what to bring; please wear loose, comfortable clothing (no jeans), trainers or jazz shoes and bring a bottle of water.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for ANYONE aged 11-21 who loves theatre! We are looking for people with  ambition, energy, authenticity, tenacity, generosity and a willingness to give it everything. Everyone has different levels of experience, and BYMT’s auditions are designed to support that. You don’t need to have any prior experience whatsoever.

I'm not 11 yet, can I still audition?

Yes, you can audition for BYMT as long as you turn 11 by the beginning of your production.

I am turning 22 this year, can I still audition?

Yes, you can audition for BYMT as long as you do not turn 22 until after your production has ended.

What happens after booking?

You will receive an email around a week prior to your audition with further details you will need for the day. If you have any urgent questions, please email cerysjones@bymt.org.

What happens after the audition?

Following your audition, the BYMT team will meet to discuss the outcome of every participant and make production offers, matching the most suitable performers to the skills required for a range of different productions. Following this, auditionees will receive one of the following responses:

  • You have a Production Offer
  • You are still in consideration for a Production following Second Stage Offers
  • You have not received a Production Offer this year, and we’d love to see you at our Development Camps.

Everyone will receive a response no later than the end of February. Those who have not received a Production Offer will have the opportunity to request feedback.

How much does the audition cost?

There is a non-refundable booking fee of £30 for online auditions and £45 for BYMT in-person auditions. This goes towards the audition space and the tuition of the creative team and, regardless of outcome, it’s an incredible way to experience a professional audition.
