A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM 2022

 ... Are you sure
That we are awake? It seems to me That yet we sleep, we dream.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of William Shakespeare’s most-known and best-loved works. And yet, just like any dream, the plot is hard to pin down.

Crossed lovers, an Athenian wedding feast, an amateur theatrical company made of carpenters, tinkers and tailors, and of course the King of Fairyland Oberon, his Queen Titania and all their train find themselves enmeshed in and out of dark woods during nights of confusion and revelry. Will the lovers be restored to their rightful match by the end? And will everyone come out of the woods unscathed?

We experience Shakespeare’s classic well-known text in a brand new light. Told by the incredible young performers and the wonderful new music, the tale we all know so well is suddenly given a new lease of life. We are reminded how timeless his work is as the young people excellently handle the text and make the stories of unrequited love feel modern and accessible.
This production also embrace pioneering virtual world technology, creating an immersive mixed reality experience for wider audiences to enjoy.

We spoke to cast member, Tegan, about her experience of working on the production over the summer.

‘I absolutely loved my BYMT experience on the A Midsummer Nights Dream Project this year! It was magical from the moment I stepped into rehearsal with the cast and creative team; we all instantly connected and became a family.

I found myself in awe whilst exploring Shakespeare’s text and finding meaning behind the beautiful words he wrote. Our wonderful director Victoria showed us how Shakespeare is still so relevant in the modern world and she has made me fall in love with his work. The incredible songs that were added to the show by our music director Joel paired with the amazing dances by our choreographer Kayti enhanced the story even more. Who knew a Shakespeare play could be a musical?!

I learnt so much whilst working with our inspirational creative team through their example of kindness, hard work and passion for the performing arts industry- they taught me invaluable skills that I will carry with me for a long time and I am so thankful for the opportunity to work with them so closely.

I’ve loved performing since I was young and working on A Midsummer Nights Dream has been such an incredible way for me to pursue my interest and learn about the industry. I have made friends for life and will treasure all of the memories this project has given me forever!’

BYMT’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream ran in August 2022 at The Holroyd Community Theatre.
