BYMT's Musical Theatre Advanced Skills Camp

This 6-day, intensive residential summer course in musical theatre skills will equip participants with the unique skillset and knowledge needed to be competitive and to excel in the theatre industry. The programme incorporates focused training in acting, singing and movement, with talks, masterclasses and seminars designed to illuminate career pathways, build confidence and demystify the audition process. This year for the first time we will introduce skills in devising new musical theatre songs and stories, using the imagination and creativity of the participants at the camp.

Receive specialist training from respected Theatre Directors, Musical Directors, Choreographers and Vocal Coaches who have a wealth of experience; including commercial West End theatre, regional repertory, experimental and fringe theatre. The course leaders are currently working within the UK’s leading drama schools and conservatoires, including Mountview and Leeds Conservatoire; they also bring experience of working in many of the other drama schools and will be there to answer questions and talk through different routes into the industry.

Tailored for the 17-21 year age bracket, this course will be particularly beneficial for those interested in auditioning for drama school or conservatoire at undergraduate or postgraduate levels. Situated at the renowned Chetham’s School for Music within easy reach of Manchester City centre, the course includes expert training plus six nights’ full board and accommodation.

Working together on the Advanced Skills Camp is one of the best ways to make great, often life-long, friends, to share a unique experience and to come out at the other end proud of what you achieved, whilst becoming more confident as a performer and a person. Participants come from many backgrounds and countries and we encourage an inclusive and collaborative context in order for individuals to thrive in using their creativity and developing their skills.

Structure of the course

60 hours of intensive tuition, rehearsals and masterclasses spread over a 6 day residential retreat. Students arrive on Sunday evening for a Monday morning start.

Students will participate in group classes (including Acting, Singing, Movement, Audition Technique, Collaborative Devising and New Musical Theatre Writing) and also get individual support with audition songs.

ACTING - Explore acting through song and approaching text, both established and new.
VOICE - Increase your vocal power, flexibility and clarity for speaking, singing and performing.
SINGING - Through ensemble and solo singing learn to interpret lyrics and improve vocal technique and skills.
MOVEMENT - Through releasing bodily tension learn how to use your body and physicality to create characters and support your singing performance.
DEVISING - Develop your storytelling, improvisation, new writing and theatre making skills.

Exciting talks and seminars include career development, industry structure and standards, actors’ agencies and starting your own company. At the end of the course participants work towards presenting rehearsed songs (solo and choral) to an invited audience.
