Michael John McCarthy is a Cork-born, Glasgow-based composer, musician and songwriter.

Music for performance includes In Time O’ Strife, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, Truant & Dolls (National Theatre of Scotland), The BFG & Steel Magnolias (Dundee Rep), Educating Ronnie & The Night Before Christmas (macrobert), The Not-So-Fatal Death of Grandpa Fredo & Bright Black (Vox Motus) and The Winter’s Tale (People’s Light & Theatre, Philadelphia) and Glory (Janice Parker Projects).  he has worked with companies including Grid Iron, Lung Ha’s, Platform, Playgroup, and Theatre Uncut.  He has twice been nominated for the Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland for Best Use of Music & Sound. He has also composed & recorded several series' worth of radio music for the BBC.

McCarthy is a multi-instrumentalist, whose primary instruments are guitar and piano accordion. He has toured Europe & Japan with Zoey Van Goey, Lord Cut-Glass and Aidan Moffat. He appears as an accordionist on albums by Alasdair Roberts, RM Hubbert, Trembling Bells & Bonnie Prince Billy amongst others.

Forthcoming projects include Turntable, an inter-generational music project at macrobert, Stirling.
