Does it need more bibbity-bobbity-boo?

Fairytales combining children’s entertainment along with sophistication and class is a combination rarely achieved during this, ‘He’s behind you!’ season, largely due to the usual humdrum repetition of characters and predictable endings. However, this wonderful production is an enchanting surprise!

The warm and friendly welcoming helps as the atmosphere is buzzing with excitement. I have personally never been to such a charming theatre before - even the bins are creative!

Sally Cookson’s adaptation of the original story is a pure stroke of genius. Her production was “beautifully done” - a direct quote from the middle-aged man sat behind me. The costumes, lighting and sound add true flare and perfection to the whole performance, allowing the audiences’ imaginations to run wild.

The use of a talented 2-man live band is brilliant as they cleverly use interesting and classic instruments to create the alluring atmosphere. The combination of the actor’s and musician’s energy is refreshing as they managed to entice each member of the audience into the story. The odd little twists and turns are fresh and witty giving it a youthful and original vibe. The actors work with outstanding passion and pizazz, making faces I have never seen before!

I must note the first half feels effortless and entertaining enough without the intended audience participation and crude nature seen in the second half, at certain points. Yet, the production is an example of simplicity being effective and inspirational, proving that old, traditional stories can be modernised and spiced up.

This is a real family production as adults and (non-squeamish) children should appreciate the different humour and creativity levels used. It manages to infuse a seasonal feel but with that subtle ‘John Lewis advert’ style. The fairy godmother is definitely working her magic here.
