BACKSTAGE COURSES
Each year we offer opportunities to talented young people (aged 16-21) who are interested in a career backstage. You'll work with a professional team of stage and technical managers, designers and builders in some of the UK's best theatres to create a brand new show on one of our residential productions. This role is heavily tailored to your interests, and could include making and finding props and costumes, cueing the lighting, running the sound and ensuring the smooth running of the rehearsals and performances. This is a fantastic opportunity to work with leading theatre professionals in a major theatre across the UK.
We look forward to welcoming many budding stage managers onto our courses in 2020!
Join the ASM Pool
The BYMT Assistant Stage Manager Pool is a collection of youngsters who have successfully applied and passed an interview. BYMT then invite ASMs from the pool to train on our projects across the country.
Joining a BYMT Company as an ASM
Once you have successfully joined the BYMT ASM Pool, as requirements develop for each of our productions, you will be invited to join a specific BYMT company. If you accept, you’ll be placed on a residential project, between 2 and 3 weeks long, to create a brand new piece of music theatre. BYMT projects take place across the UK and the selection process is not based on geography, so you may not be placed on the course closest to where you live - you may be working in London, Aberdeen, Plymouth, Belfast or somewhere else!

Is there a course fee if I'm successful?
If successful, there is a course fee. BYMT is a not-for-profit educational charity and, while we do receive Arts Council England funding to keep fees as low as possible, our primary source of income comes from course fees. The course fee varies depending on the length of the course and in 2019 our fully-residential courses for ASMs started from £625 and go up to £990 depending on the length of the course. The fee covers full-board accommodation, mentoring from leading industry professionals and 24-hour pastoral care for the whole duration of the project. A payment plan can be set up using direct debit to help if necessary. We also have a comprehensive bursary scheme if required, plus we are always happy to offer help on raising money. For more details, see the bursaries page.
